Day 86: Tap
I'm 41 and I am currently enrolled in an "Adult" Tap class. Several of my co-workers and I take weekly lessons every Friday night with a goal of performing in a recital in June. Personally, i could do without the recital part but the class is fun and it's a little bit of exercise. There's a wide range of ages in our group. Melissa (also known as "Mini Me" because she's 4'10") is 24, Patty, Marian, and Joanne are in their early 50's and as I mentioned I'm 41. We dance to "Chattanooga Choo Choo" but really we're just a train wreck. There are a few women older than anyone in our group- two look like they're in their 70's and they just can't remember a lot of steps in succession. Me, I'm about as graceful as a bull in a china store and Patty falls. All the time- seriously, like EVERY class. And not a quick slip or loss of balance mind you. A cartoon-like fall where her feet just slip out from under her and her legs fly up in the air and she lands flat on her back. Every class. And she gets up every time and takes a bow. Some of my family are way too enthusiastic about going to the recital and I'm CERTAIN it's not because they love me or because they're interested in tap. It's all about the video recorder and You Tube. Good thing I have a sense of humor!

Day 71: Piling

It's almost spring here on Long Island- at least it looked that way today. I made three pit stops on my way home from work today and took a bunch of potential "photos of the day". I let the hubs pick out his favorite. I took quite a few that made me very happy which is unusual. I guess that's a sign that things are brigtening up since changing the clocks last week. Yay! Day 154: Frankie the Pug

This is Frankie and she's a girl. I'm not usually a small dog lover but Frankie has stolen my heart. My husband has already had a lot of time with her and he refers to her as "his girlfriend". In fact, the first time he was going to visit our friend he said, "I"m off to see my girlfriend". My head snapped around so fast my head nearly popped off. He had a stupid grin on his face and told me his girlfriend is a pug. I was OK with that. :)

These were the eggs I cooked on Friday. An egg is just an egg and tastes just like an egg, but somehow when they're prepared over an open fire deep in the mountains, they just taste better. :)

Day 130: Baseball
May 10, 2009
Ken and I arrived on Long Island after 3pm and went straight to my younger brother's house to celebrate Mother's day with my mom and the nephews. Aidan was tossing a baseball onto a spring like net that bounced the ball back for him to practice catching. I took a shot of one of his baseballs just lying in the grass. Ken and I were happy to stop, not just because we wanted to wish my mom a happy day, but because we had another hour and a half to drive to get home so were were glad to get a break. We're both exhausted after a long journey. :)

PS- sorry for cramming three days worth of shots in one- I uploaded three photos tonight because I didn't have access to the internet during the last leg of my vacation.

Day 96: Baby Lambs
April 6, 2009
Right down the road from me is an organic farm that is home to several animals including a goat, a heiland cow, a black sheep (with a new baby) and a couple of lambs and their two babies, seen here. I've taken pictures here before (they're in my NoFo Gallery) but it was a very grey day and the shots didn't come out as well as I would have liked. Today is beautiful. These guys kept running away when I would approach them (even though I was on the opposite side of the fence). I was glad to get this shot of the one sticking his tongue out at me as the other cautiously watches. If you think that's fresh, you should have heard the loud noise the big lamb let out- not sure if he was "growling" at me or what it was but it sounded like the biggest burp I've ever heard.

Day 151: Dakota

My cousin Cathy recently lost her favorite dog Emma- she referred to her as her "soul mate". She was crushed by the loss. Meet Dakota, the newest addition to her family. A dachound like Emma. Adorable, right? The perfect thing to heal open wounds. Cathy drove up from Virginia and a bunch of us went to a "chick party" complete with a psychic. The psychic saw many things in my future- a move to the south east coast, possibly North Carolina in two years, two children, and she thinks I will make a lot of money if I go into children and pet photography here on Long Island. Oh, and when I asked her when I'll be getting a wide angle lens, she said she saw it coming to me in the next 3 weeks. Sounds impossible to me but I'll keep my fingers crossed lol.

Day 53: French Toast
February 22, 2009
My cousin Amy and my mom came over last night for dinner and a movie. The hubs had nowhere to go so the poor guy was there too. He should have smelled the boobie trap. Plenty of food and even more wine - I made one of my favorites: Pasta Bolognese. I should mention that my mother is an old school Republican and Amy is a staunch Liberal while Ken and I are somewhat Independent and usually vote for whoever is closest to the center rather than by party. A few comments about Obama and George W. caused the upset of the decade with mom flying off the handle. Whoever said alcohol and politics don't mix is a genius. Amy got to go home after the movie but Mom stayed the night. I made some French Toast for breakfast and Ken, always the joker, told his mother in law that she was eating Freedom Toast- a nod to our former President. Two out of three of us agreed that it was all Ken's fault since he poured the wine (always the fall guy!) and now all is right with the world.

Day 124: The Biltmore in Ashville, NC
May 4, 2009
Today was a pretty nice day weather wise. Overcast but at least it didn't rain while we toured the outdoor gardens at the Biltmore Estates. So far our trip has been pretty rainy. James Hill recommended a beautiful spot to drive from Greensborough to Asheville but it was overcast and rainy the entire day we traveled and since time did not allow for a leisurely drive anyway, we opted to skip it, much to our disappointment. Our friends, the owner of yesterday's dog of the day, confirmed that it would be a gorgeous drive. We plan on visiting them again next year and hopefully we will get to make that trip. So far we're having a fun time on our trip, as is Flat Andy. He met several new people today, drove a motorcycle, visited the Biltmore Estates, and hung out with a guy named "Round Randy". It was a hoot. I put the new photos in the Flat Andy gallery for anyone interested. :)

Day 91: Tulip
April 1, 2009
Yet another dinner sponsored by a pharmaceutical company. This time it was at the Jamesport Manor which is gorgeous. It's another old victorian mansion that was converted into a high end restaurant. It's especially beautiful in the summer when the flowers are in bloom as the lawn is nicely manicured and there is a garden in the front along with a few benches and some wine barrels converted into flower planters. I saw a few daffodils and shot them but it was a gray day and by evening it was just plain drab. The shots were boring. Just before I walked away I noticed another pot with two or three tulips in it. I focused my macro lens on one of them and noticed a cute little green swirl and knew right away it had to be my photo of the day. I think this will be my last dinner out for awhile as the calorie count at the end of the day is through the roof lol. Why work so hard all week to blow it on one meal, right? But the short ribs over mashed turnips were delicious nonetheless. :)

Photo a Day Project 2009 :
A Photo a Day (also known as Project 365) - What is it?? It's exactly what the name implies - a photo is posted each and every day for a full year. You can choose to impose whatever rules or criteria you wish- some photographers insist that the photo be taken the same day it's posted, others will post an older photo that they "Photoshop" the day they post it, and still others don't impose any rules at all. My goal for this project is to take several photos every day and choose the best from that day to post. I have been able to stick to it for the most part (with one or two exceptions so far). I carry my Nikon D300 wherever I go- it's now like one of my limbs. It's one of the most challenging things I've ever committed to doing but so far it's been well worth it. If you've got a minute to spare, go ahead and hit the slideshow button. And don't be shy about giving a photo a “thumbs up” or even commenting if you see something you like. :D

Lastly, for those visitors that aren't members of Smugmug, the photos posted to this gallery are critiqued by photographers that belong to the "Daily Community". If you click on the "DailyPhotos" link above (it's next to my name), you will be taken to a gallery with photos posted by other the members. There's a lot of beautiful work out there.... you can get lost for hours.

My Cats: O'Puss & Kramer : O'Puss and Kramer are litter mates born in the spring of 1997. I never really cared much for cats having only owned a dog in my childhood with little exposure to felines. These guys were born in my mom's back yard under a bush by a stray cat being cared for by a neighbor. After repeated prompting by my mother during a visit back in '97, I reluctantly went in the back yard to check them out. At first glance of that little smudge on O'Puss' nose I was instantly in love and was the owner of two kittens. The rest, as they say, is history.

Dead Bunker : May 18, 2009. On my way home from work, I noticed the water near a parking area looked lumpy, almost like it was iced over white caps. When I got out of the car the smell almost overcame me. I went over to the dock with my camera this is what I saw. People were driving up and getting out of their cars to see for themselves- apparently the word got out and spread across town while I was in the office. I asked one of the locals why all the fish were dead and he explained that they're "Bunker" and the Bluefish like to eat them. They corral the Bunker into dead end creeks and estuaries so they're trapped and they can feast for hours, depleting the area of oxygen until all the Bunkers suffocate. Apparently no one eats Bunker but I was disturbed and upset by this nonetheless. It was so sad seeing all of those dead fish. I'm actually glad they were killed by Bluefish. At first I thought it was the pollutants that killed them off.

UPDATE: The fish have been cleaned up and one of the guys in the clean-up crew said the fish were THREE FEET DEEP!!! Can you believe it??

Girls at the Beach : Finally.... a day I didn't work until 7pm! I picked up a pizza at Lenny's for my husband and I and as soon as I finished eating, I put on my shorts and flip flops, got into my Jeep and drove off to find my photo of the day. I was at a local park/beach when three cute girls stopped by to swing on the swings. I asked if they would mind me photographing them on the swings so I could get some practice shooting motion and they were happy to do so. Here's my dilemma: I had three cute "models" but since I didn't know them or their families, I couldn't make any of the shots of any of the girls my photo of the day since I was worried some of the parents wouldn't appreciate it. I gave each girl my business card and told them I would make a private gallery for them and that I would password protect it so their parents didn't have to be too concerned. If the three beach models are viewing this gallery- THANK YOU for letting me practice on you!! Enjoy the rest of your summer!! :)
